DEAD FOREST

In the result of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption of 1975-1976 the total amount of the eruptive products reached 2,3 km³. Ancient larch forests were covered by the ash and scoria. 40 km² territory around the volcano became a burnt desert, lakes and rivers dried up. Animals left this area. And even now the territory around the Tolbachik volcano shows the disastrous power of the nature.

Large cracks of volcanic eruptions, where the volume of lava, ash and slag is more than 1 km³ – is a rare natural phenomenon. In historical time such eruptions were observed six times. Two of these eruptions occurred in Mexico in 1759-74 and 1943. Two eruptions were in Iceland in 930 and 1783-84. The fifth eruption occurred in 1730-36 on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Archipelago. The sixth eruption occurred in Kamchatka in 1975-76 in the area of Tolbachik Valley.
