ILYINSKY VOLCANO

The regular cone of the Ilyinsky Volcano is the main one in the Kuril lake landscape panorama. The volcano was formed at the ring fault along which the Pauzhetskaya depression was formed. The lava flows of the volcano reached the lake and moved the coastline to the west.

coordinates: N51.49629º, E157.20002º

The volcano is the regular cone with the plain slopes only slightly covered by erosion. The height of the volcano is 1758 m. There are two craters at the top - the main one, prolonged, 25 m depth, and below the first one there is the explosion crater. In the central part of the east slope there is the second explosion crater with 1 km diameter; it was formed in 1901. The volcano is not active now.

The north-east slopes of the volcano are covered by 2-3 m level of pumice which was erupted from the east crater. The pumice eruptions happened earlier, and the thickness of these sediments counts tens of meters. The prospecting for pumice mining was organized at the Ilyinsky deposit - pumice is rare building material at the continent. It was supposed to provide the Far East with it.
