KRONOTSKAYA SOPKA VOLCANO (KRONOTSKY VOLCANO)

The volcano is clearly seen from afar because its height is more than 3500 m. Its altitude – 3528 m. It is one of the most beautiful volcanoes in Kamchatka.

The volcano is active; it is located in the south part of Gamchen Volcano range to the east from the Kronotskoye Lake. It has the regular cone with steep slopes cut with barrancoes which begin at 2500 m height and get its maximum at 1000 m height (200 m depth). The bottom diameter is 16 km, the volume of the bottom is 120 km3. The volcano has the dominant position at the volcanic belt. The top is always covered by the glacier. The slopes of the cone reach the Pacific in the east, and the Kronotskoye Lake in the west. Very powerful eruptions must have created such volcanic construction. And it was. Now the Kronotsky Volcano cannot be called active. But even in 1942 it had the attempt to erupt, when the gas-ash cloud appeared over the top. Now the volcano has only the fumarole activity at the south slopes. The active ground is registered at the height of 3150 m.
